Tax Office Releases 1.826 Million Voter Roll
Bettencourt Says 12,253 New Voters Added for Primaries

HOUSTON – February 18, 2008 – Today, Harris County Voter Registrar Paul Bettencourt released the Harris County voter roll to County Clerk Beverly Kaufman’s office and the Secretary of State before early voting which starts tomorrow. There are now 1,826,231 registered voters in Harris County that can cast a vote in the upcoming March 4th Presidential Primaries.

“The 12,253 new voter registration applications were sent in the two weeks prior to the registration cut-off of February 4th. Of these new voter registrations, 5,848 or 47% are 30 years old or younger, and 1,145 or 9.3% have birth dates in 1989 alone,” said Bettencourt. “I’m glad they joined the voter roll in time to select the National Primary of their choice on March 4th,” he added.

The Tax Office voter registration department has received approximately 25 thousand more voter registration applications after the February 4th cut-off date. They include both new voter and address change applications, and will be in effect on the voter roll by the run-off election in April.

“Harris County should have a voter registration roll topping 2 million voters by November,” said Bettencourt. “Remember you must be registered 30 days in advance of any election in Texas, so don’t wait until the fall, get registered to vote today,” he added.

Bettencourt reminds voters that the entire voter database is available online at the Tax Office Web site at www.hcvoter.net, to make it easier for registered voters to verify their voter information status and download precinct data and precinct maps before going to early vote in the March 4, 2008 primary election.

The County Clerk Beverly Kaufman has polling locations, hours of operations and sample ballots at www.harrisvotes.com for your convenience.

The Tax Office Voter Registration Department is also available by phone at 713-368-VOTE (8683) to assist registered voters Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. and during early voting hours this Saturday and Sunday.
