Tax Office Open 24/7 For the 165,000 Who Haven't PAID
New Mixed E-Payment Options Available at  www.hctax.net

HOUSTON – June 29, 2007 - Harris County Tax Assessor - Collector Paul Bettencourts announces that the Tax Office is open for business 24/7 over the weekend at www.hctax.net.  The Tax Office is now accepting partial property tax payments online using multiple credit cards or multiple e-Checks.

"During this 2006 property tax season I have noticed that for some taxpayers the addition of HISD property taxes to 2006 property tax bills has pushed them beyond their single credit card and bank account limits," said Bettencourt.  " The Tax Office has worked quickly along with our banking partner Amegy Bank to address these taxpayers' changing needs and provide them with the flexibility of these improved options to pay their property tax bills."

Property taxpayers now have the choice of using any combination of credit cards and/or e-Checks online.  This new payment option is now available on the Tax Office Web site at www.hctax.net .  Also, full payment can be made by touch tone telephone at 713-368-CARD (2273).  A non-refundable transaction fee of 2.15% is added to all credit card charges.  E-checks are free of charge.

"Bettencourt continued, "At this date, there are 165,000 property taxpayers who have not paid their taxes. Every dollar paid will save them 26.6% in reduced penalty and interest.  An average Houston area homeowner can save $797 in penalties and interest by paying their property taxes before Monday, July 2nd collection deadline."

For more information, taxpayers may call 713-368-2000 or visit the Tax Office Web site at www.hctax.net .
