Will The City Council Vote To Keep $100 Million Taxpayer Dollars?
City of Houston Tax Rate Vote Set For Today
HOUSTON – November 7,
2007 - Harris County Tax Assessor - Collector Paul Bettencourt released
the following information to The Mayor and City Council, requesting a
larger tax rate cut than the proposed, 1/8 of a penny. The vote on Agenda
Item 19a is scheduled at City Hall this morning.
- Latest property tax revenue increase is projected to be over
$100 Million or nearly 13% up over last year
|
- Average home will see an 11% increase in appraised value based
upon the latest HCAD appraisal roll just released last
week
|
- The ratio of additional money flowing to City coffers verses
the amount of property relief for City taxpayers is an astounding
58.9 to 1. (The City gets $100 Million more taxpayers’ dollars and
the taxpayers don’t pay an additional $1.7 Million, due to the 1/8
of a penny tax rate cut.)
|
Mr.Bettencourt is strongly recommending to The Mayor, City Council Members
and to many City of Houston taxpayers directly that the tax rate cut
should be at least one penny or greater. As Mr. Bettencourt said in the
public hearing on tax rates, “a
1/8 of a penny tax rate cut is just not enough.”
