HOUSTON – October 5, 2006 - Harris County Voter Registrar Paul Bettencourt reminds Harris County residents that October 10, 2006, is the deadline to register to vote in the November 7 General Election. State law requires that voters be registered 30 days prior to the election in which they wish to vote. Currently 1.9 million voters are registered in Harris County.
“October 10 is the deadline for eligible Harris County residents to register to vote. I encourage all eligible residents to register to vote and ‘make your voice heard’ in the upcoming November 7 General Election,” said Bettencourt. “Per the Election Center Inc., national voter registration is down 2.5% from 2004 and nearly 3% in Texas. We’re doing a little better in Harris County as we only are down 2.14% from our 2004 record level.”
Completed registration applications must be delivered to any Tax Office location by 4:45 p.m., the end of the business day on October 10, 2006, or postmarked by 11:59 p.m., and an “in county” Internet option is also available.
Applicants may register to vote if they are:
- A resident of Harris County, and
- At least 17 years, 10 months of age (to vote, you must be 18), and
- A U.S. citizen, and
- Not declared mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court of law, and
- Not finally convicted of a felony - or have satisfied the court’s requirements after a felony conviction or have received a pardon.
“Registered voters who have moved within Harris County can easily follow the links from www.hcvoter.net to the Texas Secretary of State’s Web site and update their registration to reflect their new address,” said Bettencourt. “The Tax Office multilingual Web site offers voters 24/7 access to their voter records with the most current information available. It’s easy and convenient to ‘Get online instead of in line’ prior to the October 10 voter registration deadline.”
Applications and information regarding the status of registered voters are available on the Tax Office Web site at www.hcvoter.net. For more information, please call 713-368-VOTE (8683).
