Voter Registration Deadline For March Primary Is Monday, February 6
Applications Available Online 24/7

HOUSTON – February 3, 2006 - Harris County Voter Registrar Paul Bettencourt reminds residents of Harris County that February 6, 2006, is the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming March 7th primary election. State law requires that voters be registered 30 days prior to the election in which they wish to vote.

“Eligible Harris County residents who want to vote in next month’s primary must be registered to vote by next week’s deadline of February 6,” said Bettencourt. “In Texas, you don’t have to register to vote as a Republican or Democrat. You can vote in the primary of your choice, but you must be registered first.”

Completed registration applications must be postmarked by 11:59 p.m. Monday or delivered to any Tax Office location by 4:45 p.m., the end of the business day on February 6, 2006.

Applicants may register to vote if they are:

  • A resident of Harris County, and
  • At least 17 years, 10 months of age (to vote, you must be 18), and
  • A U.S. citizen, and
  • Not declared mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court of law, and not finally convicted of a felony—or have satisfied the court’s requirements after a felony conviction or have received a pardon.

Voters who have moved within Harris County can easily follow the links from www.hcvoter.net to the Texas Secretary of State’s Web site and update their registration to reflect their new address.

Applications and information regarding the status of registered voters are available on the Tax Office Web site at www.hcvoter.net. For more information, please call 713-368-VOTE (8683).
