Voter Registration Deadline Is April 13 For May Election
Affecting 48% of Harris County Voters
Applications Available Online 24/7

HOUSTON – April 12, 2006 - Harris County Voter Registrar Paul Bettencourt reminds residents of Harris County that April 13, 2006, is the deadline to register to vote in the May 13 uniform election. State law requires that voters be registered 30 days prior to the election in which they wish to vote. <

“I encourage Harris County residents to register to vote and ‘make your voice heard’ in the estimated 84 municipal, school and utility district elections on May 13,” said Bettencourt. “Your vote can really matter in low-turnout elections, especially when only 48% of the county will be eligible to vote in this election. Take the first step – register to vote.”

Completed registration applications must be delivered to any Tax Office location by 4:45 p.m., the end of the business day on April 13, 2006, or postmarked by 11:59 p.m.

Applicants may register to vote if they are:

  • A resident of Harris County, and
  • At least 17 years, 10 months of age (to vote, you must be 18), and
  • A U.S. citizen, and
  • Not declared mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court of law, and
  • Not finally convicted of a felony - or have satisfied the court’s requirements after a felony conviction or have received a pardon.

Voters who have moved within Harris County can easily follow the links from www.hcvoter.net to the Texas Secretary of State’s Web site and update their registration to reflect their new address.

Applications and information regarding the status of registered voters are available
